For Scavenge Challenge - #8 Purchase regretted
For ATSH - #20 Why do I still have this?
This is my road bike. Why do I have a road bike? I seldom ride on paved roads, and the paved trails I travel are generally a bit rough for narrow tires, and if I'm not riding paved trail, I'm riding logging roads where a good grip on the surface is essential to staying upright.
My mountain bike is a sturdy, inexpensive Schwinn. The derailleur seldom needs adjustment. In comparison, the significantly more expensive road bike's derailleur goes out of alignment between morning and afternoon on a 45-mile ride even if I stick to pavement.
Yep, I regret purchasing the road bike now, although it seemed like a good idea at the time. Famous words, those: "It seemed like a good idea..." I'm not sure why I'm hanging onto it either, except that I tell myself I might do some road miles some day. For now, it lives in a corner of the garage, a corner Schwinn only visits in the heart of winter when we can't be out on the trail together.
As always, I ask that you please refrain from posting graphics in your comments. Thanks.
1977 Volkswagen Rabbit - Champagne Edition!
I could not believe my luck. Riding my bicycle toward Grant's Tomb in Manhattan, I found this immaculately preserved 1977 Volkswagen Rabbit parked along Riverside Drive South. This is the original VW Golf, called the Rabbit in North America, and despite its now-legendary reliability problems - in comparison to the bulletproof Beetle - it remains a classic, the first significant Volkswagen of the watercooled age.
This Rabbit was a "Champagne Edition" model, a limited editon sold to celebrate the sale of the one millionth Golf/Rabbit in the United States. Champagne Rabbits got wider tires and silvery green or light gold metallic paint (the silvery green was classier), and something VW fans could have done without, velvet upholestry. How un-German!
The 1977 Rabbit - still made in Wolfsburg, the Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania plant not open just yet - boasted 78 hp from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The '77 Rabbit was the first Rabbit to have fuel injection. Ironically, the Beetle hardtop - in its last year in the U.S. in 1977 - had already gained that feature.
